Search Gadgets for GMail

These compact gadgets bring search functionality into the sidebar of GMail. Search the whole of the web with Google, or find bargains on Amazon (either US or UK), all without leaving your e-mail to do so.

On most browsers, you can also highlight search terms within your e-mail messages and drag them to the gadget's search box. So if you receive an e-mail about something you want to find online, or a book or DVD that you'd like to buy, you can drag it straight into the gadget and go!

The only hitch is that there's currently no easy mechanism for adding a gadget directly to GMail, as there is in iGoogle. It's a manual process. Here are the required steps:

  1. In GMail, click the Settings link (at the upper-right), and go to the Labs tab.
  2. In Labs, turn on the Add any gadget by URL feature (currently towards the bottom), and save your changes.
  3. Back in Settings, go to the Gadgets tab.
  4. Copy & paste the appropriate URL from below into the box you'll find there.

Search Amazon.com

Search Amazon.co.uk

http://gad.getpla.net/search/amazon_uk.xml

Search Google

These gadgets are also usable on iGoogle, and while there's not much point in adding another Google search box to that page, the Amazon search is handy – and more compact than other Amazon gadgets. To get a copy for yourself, just click to add either the US version or UK version to your iGoogle home page.
